Your Indiana Drivers Permit allows you to take what is perhaps one of the most important steps you will be taking in your life. To prepare you for this important step, we recommend taking a Drivers Education course. This will help you to meet the requirements for getting an Indiana Drivers Permit. It will also help you understand the many decisions you will face daily while driving so you can make the best choices when you are behind the wheel.
The Indiana Drivers Permit
Your Indiana Drivers Permit allows you to learn and practice driving skills while accompanied by a licensed instructor or a parent or legal guardian 21 years of age or older with a valid Indiana driver's license. After holding the Indiana Drivers Permit for 180 days (6 months), you can then graduate to a probationary license (or full driver's license if you turn 18 by the time you apply for your license). During the first 180 days, you will only be able to drive without supervision between the hours of 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. After this period, you may drive from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. between Sunday and Friday and from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. between Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, during the first 180 days, you may not transport other teenage passengers when you are driving unless they are family members.
Getting Your Indiana Drivers Permit
When you apply for your Indiana Drivers Permit, you will need to bring proof of identity. This includes identity documents like a birth certificate, Social Security number, proof of lawful status (such as citizenship), and proof of residency in Indiana. Once you go in and apply for your Indiana Drivers Permit, you will need to pass both a written and vision test. Indiana will also require you to provide a completed agreement of financial liability signed by your parent or legal guardian.
